At Temple Heart & Vascular Institute, we know that it takes a team to deliver exceptional heart and vascular care. We’ve been doing so for more than 60 years, introducing many new procedures and programs to the region in that time.
Our specialists are at the top of their fields and include cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, vascular and endovascular experts as well as cardiac anesthesiologists, radiologists, and beyond.
We work alongside our patients, taking the time to teach them about the many aspects of their condition and the various options available to them. By empowering our patients with knowledge and responsibility, we are helping them to take ownership of their care and improve outcomes.

Follow these eight steps recommended by the American Heart Association to build a prevention or treatment plan to improve your heart health. Start a conversation with your healthcare team of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists to create a healthy heart plan that’s right for you.
Be aware that smoking, heart conditions, or a family history of heart disease can increase your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Discuss your health history with your doctor to understand the prevention options that are available to you.
The Temple Heart and Vascular Institute will work with you to develop a prevention or treatment plan specifically tailored to your needs. In the majority of cases, lifestyle changes, medications, or other non-invasive options are the first recommendations.
For conditions that require more complex interventions, our highly experienced team is equipped with some of the most advanced technology to assess and diagnose your condition.
Include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, plant-based proteins, lean animal proteins, and fish as the main parts of your diet. Limit refined carbohydrates like cereal and white bread; processed meats, like bacon; and sweetened drinks. Read nutrition labels to help limit sodium, added sugars, and saturated fats, and avoid trans fats.
Exercise is an important part of heart health. Aim for a total of 150 minutes of moderate activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. If you are just getting started with exercise, find simple ways to be more active for short periods of time throughout the day.
Try to create a weekly meal plan to lose weight if you are overweight or obese. This can help you create better eating habits and not resort to making last-minute unhealthy choices during a busy workweek. If you need help creating a meal plan for healthy weight loss, talk to your healthcare team.
If you smoke, vape, or use other forms of tobacco, make a plan to quit. You should also avoid secondhand smoke. If you need help with quitting, talk to your doctor about the options that are available to help you quit and begin your smoke-free journey.
Certain health conditions can also impact your heart health. If you have high blood pressure, high blood sugar, or high cholesterol, it is important to talk to your doctor about lifestyle changes or any medications you can take to help manage your condition. Adjusting what you eat and how much you exercise can also make a big difference.
The Temple Heart & Vascular team treats a whole range of cardiovascular conditions, including:
If you take statins or other medications to help control cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure, make sure you take them as directed.
Ask questions and share challenges you experience with your doctor throughout this process to improve your heart health. You can make lifestyle choices that reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke to live a longer, healthier life.
