WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS?

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that you can see just under the skin. They are commonly found on the inside part of the calf or thigh. Varicose veins develop due to weakening or damaged valves in the veins that allow blood to flow, causing blood to pool in the veins. Under the pressure of gravity these veins can stretch and expand, and may become longer, twisted and painful.

A WIDE RANGE OF THERAPIES THAT GET RESULTS

Varicose veins are a condition that cannot be cured but, when lifestyle changes are not enough, they can be treated through a number of different procedures. Most are performed minimally invasively on an outpatient basis. Our doctors will work with you to determine which of the following procedures are best for you:

  • Sclerotherapy is performed by a surgeon who injects a chemical into the vein to shrink it.
  • Ablation destroys vein tissue using a heated catheter. This procedure is performed by a vascular surgeon.
  • Laser treatments are performed by a vascular surgeon who uses laser energy to destroy vein tissue.
  • Other possible procedures/surgeries may include: vein stripping, or the surgical removal of the saphenous vein in the leg.
