Temple Lung Center is a leader in one of the newest treatment options for severe emphysema, Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction, or BLVR, using endobronchial valves. This new procedure allows us to use a bronchoscope to place small valves into the patient’s airways. These valves release trapped air, which can reduce shortness of breath and improve lung function and quality of life.
The BLVR procedure doesn’t involve cutting, but a patient should expect to stay in the hospital for at least a few days to monitor their outcome.

The Temple Lung Center is a world leader in the testing and use of endobronchial valves. In fact, Temple is the first center in the nation to perform this treatment option. Temple led the clinical trial that proved the effectiveness of an endobronchial valve, and we are a national training site for doctors who want to learn the procedure.
Learn more about BLVR in this video:
Patients with COPD may be eligible for a clinical trial when standard treatment options are not enough. A clinical trial is a research study that compares medical therapies to see if one works better than another. Participating in a clinical trial may give patients access to new cutting-edge therapies before they’re approved for commercial use. The Temple Lung Center has dozens of clinical trials for patients with COPD.
The Temple Lung Center is a world leader in treating and researching COPD. In fact, our lung specialists treat more COPD patients than any other hospital in Philadelphia. We have also participated in every major COPD clinical trial in the U.S. over the past 20 years.
Temple’s high patient volume and robust research program mean our doctors have the experience and innovative treatments needed to help our patients breathe easier. It’s why so many patients turn to Temple for a second opinion when they’re told they are out of options.
