Advanced Treatment Options for CTEPH

Left untreated, CTEPH carries a poor prognosis with life expectancy commonly reported at 1 – 3 years. Time and appropriate care can change that trajectory. At Temple, in addition to targeted medical therapy, we have surgical and procedural therapies to significantly reduce symptoms, restore function, and improve long term outcomes.

  • Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy (PTE) – Surgical removal of blockages causing strain on the right heart.
  • Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA) – Minimally invasive procedure to relieve heart strain caused by narrowed pulmonary arteries.
  • Heart and/or Lung Transplants – Access to heart, lung, or heart-lung transplantation for patients with severe cases.

Proven Outcomes and Experience

Experience matters when it comes to treating a complex disease like CTEPH.

  • Over 500 pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) procedures performed with a 95% survival rate
  • Over 500 balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) procedures performed with improvement in hemodynamics, functional capacity, oxygenation and quality of life
  • Over 1,300 heart transplants performed and over 1,600 lung transplants, leading the nation in volume and outcomes

Nationally Recognized Leadership

Temple has designed its transplant evaluation program to reduce barriers for both patients and their providers. We partner with referring physicians at every step, ensuring continuity of care and transparent communication.
