Advanced Surgical Treatments

For patients with medication-resistant epilepsy, our neurosurgical team may consider the following procedures to reduce or eliminate seizures:

Corpus callosotomy to cut the connection between the left and right sides of the brain to reduce the spread of seizures across the brain
Focal non-temporal resection, removal of the small area of brain tissue causing seizures for when the seizure focus is outside of the temporal lobe
Lesionectomy to remove a specific lesion that is causing seizures
Temporal lobe resection, removal of part or all of the temporal lobe
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a small pacemaker-like device implanted under the skin of the chest to send gentle electrical pulses to the vagus nerve in the neck
