Expanded Heart Transplant Eligibility Criteria

Temple Helps More Patients Qualify for this Livesaving Surgery

At the Temple Heart & Vascular Institute, we have redefined heart transplant care by expanding our eligibility criteria to give more patients a second chance. While other programs may turn patients away due to age, BMI, pulmonary hypertension, or other high-risk factors, Temple Heart & Vascular Institute takes a more holistic approach. Our expert team, led by Dr. Eman Hamad, Director of the Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Program, and Dr. Yoshiya Toyoda, Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery, leverages the latest advancements and decades of experience to evaluate patients holistically, ensuring that more individuals can access this lifesaving surgery—often with shorter wait times.

Expanded Heart Transplant
Criteria at Temple Includes:
  • Up to age 74
  • BMI up to 38
  • Abstained from alcohol, smoking or marijuana for a time based on level of dependence
  • Elevated panel-reactive antibody (PRA)
  • History of mantle radiation, multiple sternomities, or cancer in the last 5 years
  • HIV positive
  • Have pulmonary hypertension

Shorter Wait Times, Successful Outcomes

Based on statistics from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients’ January 2025 report, Temple leads the region in efficiency as the fastest list-to-transplant site in the Philadelphia region. Our team excels at evaluating and utilizing donor hearts effectively, resulting in a higher transplant rate and reduced waitlist times.
