The labrum is a thick layer of cartilage that lines the rim of the hip socket. It helps deepen the socket, securing the femoral head with the hip ligaments and joint capsule. A tear to the labrum is often related to activities involving repetitive pivoting or hip flexion movements, as commonly seen in athletic activity.
At Temple Health, our sports medicine physicians and orthopaedic surgeons provide expert evaluation and treatment for hip labral tears. We offer both non-surgical and surgical options, including arthroscopic labral repair, and work with each patient to find the right approach based on their condition and goals.

Symptoms of a hip labral tear can vary widely among individuals, and sometimes may not cause any symptoms at all. Common symptoms include:
Treatment depends on the severity of the tear and your goals. Your Temple Health provider will review your symptoms and imaging to recommend the right approach.
Hip labral repair is performed arthroscopically, which means your surgeon works through small incisions using a camera and specialized instruments rather than opening the joint. The procedure is typically done on an outpatient basis.
Your Temple surgeon and physical therapist will develop a personalized plan and walk you through what to expect at your pre-operative appointment and throughout follow-up care.
