As part of the Temple Healthy Chest Initiative, we are urging more people to get screened as early as possible to detect any abnormalities. Please watch this video to learn more about our lung screening process, who is eligible and why it’s important to take the next step to get screened.

Lung cancer screening is performed using a low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan, which can detect abnormalities not seen on a chest X-ray. This is the only recommended screening tool for the detection of lung cancer. The scan itself takes about 10 minutes. LDCT combines special imaging equipment with sophisticated computers to create a detailed 3D image of your lungs.
This test requires no preparation, fasting or needles. You will lie fully clothed on a table that will move in and out of the CT machine. Unlike an MRI, LDCT is completely open, and should not cause feelings of claustrophobia. Specialized radiologists and pulmonologists from Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Temple Lung Center will review the test for signs of lung cancer or other conditions.
During your LDCT screening appointment, we may also perform a spirometry test, where you will breathe into a mouthpiece to measure how much air you inhale and exhale. This simple test can diagnose a number of conditions that can affect your breathing.
If an abnormality is discovered, our team of lung specialists will discuss any follow-up testing that may be necessary and develop a care plan tailored specifically to your needs.
In addition to lung cancer, a low-dose CT may reveal other medical conditions such as COPD, sleep apnea, heart disease, osteoporosis, or problems in the esophagus – all of which can affect your overall health. Addressing these conditions early, before they progress is key. When identified, Temple will connect you with specialists to tailor a treatment plan just for you. It’s part of a greater program – the Temple Healthy Chest Initiative, where experts from Fox Chase Cancer Center and the Temple Lung Center, two of Philadelphia’s world-class health centers, joined together to provide patients with the most comprehensive care in the region.
