EDUCATION IS PART OF YOUR TRANSPLANT CARE

A lung transplant is more than a surgery. It is a lifelong commitment that requires preparation, active participation and close follow-up.

Considering a lung transplant can bring many questions — about the evaluation process, surgery, recovery, medications and what life may look like after transplant. To help you and your loved ones learn more and prepare, the Temple Lung Canter’s Transplant team has developed a comprehensive patient guide with information and resources to help you understand each step of the transplant journey.

Inside, you’ll find information to help you:

  • Understand what to expect during your transplant evaluation
  • Prepare for transplant and your hospital stay
  • Learn about the transplant surgery and recovery process
  • Understand medications and lifelong follow-up care
  • Help family members and caregivers understand their role

Download the guide and keep it with you as you move through your transplant journey. We encourage you and your caregivers to review the information together, write down questions and bring them to your appointments. Understanding what to expect can help you and your family make informed decisions about your care.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON YOUR TRANSPLANT JOURNEY

1. Evaluation

Your journey begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Our transplant specialists look at your overall health, lung disease, treatment history and other factors to determine whether transplantation may be the right option for you.

2. Education and Preparation

We help our patients and their families/support systems understand what transplantation involves. You will learn about the surgery, recovery, medications, potential risks and the lifelong care required after transplant.

3. Transplant

If you are approved for transplant and a suitable donor lung becomes available, our transplant team will guide you through the next steps and provide specialized care before, during, and after surgery.

4. Recovery

Recovery continues well beyond the hospital. Our team works with you to help you regain strength, adjust to life after transplant, and follow your personalized treatment plan.

5. Lifelong Follow-Up

A lung transplant does not cure the underlying disease that damaged your lungs, and transplant requires lifelong care. You will need daily medications and regular follow-up to protect your new lungs and monitor your health.

At Temple, your transplant team remains part of your support system long after surgery.

TRANSPLANT IS A PARTNERSHIP

Successful transplantation requires more than an experienced medical team. It also requires an informed and engaged patient.

You and your support system will play an important role in your care. Taking your medications as prescribed, attending follow-up appointments, following your care team’s recommendations and communicating openly with your transplant team are essential parts of life after transplant.

Our commitment is to give you the information, expertise and support you need to take an active role in your transplant journey.

UNDERSTANDING THE BENEFITS AND RISKS

Considering a lung transplant is a major decision. Every patient is different, and transplantation has both potential benefits and risks.

Our team will provide the information you need to understand what transplant may mean for you, including the potential benefits, risks, limitations and lifelong responsibilities involved.

This process — known as informed consent — is an important part of deciding whether transplantation is right for you.

You should never feel rushed to make this decision. Our team is here to answer your questions and help you understand your options.
