Fox Chase is one of the few cancer centers in the nation with a high level of expertise in researching and treating sarcoma. The results of studies conducted by Fox Chase doctors have been crucial in advancing the understanding of sarcoma diagnosis and treatment – particularly for gastrointestinal stromal tumors, a soft tissue sarcoma that begins in the digestive tract or stomach.
We are proud of our highly team-based and multidisciplinary approach during treatment for these rare, complex cancers, and we support your care and recovery long after you leave the hospital. Our sarcoma specialists work together to provide some of the latest treatments and technology available, including:
Surgery is considered the mainstay of treatment for sarcoma. Fox Chase surgical oncologists commonly use minimally invasive and robotic surgeries for smaller incisions and faster recovery. Our fellowship-trained team also includes reconstructive plastic surgeons who help improve quality of life for sarcoma patients by restoring appearance, form and function after treatment for large tumors.
Fox Chase radiation oncologists were first in the region to use intensity-modulated radiation therapy, a common treatment for sarcoma that uses external radiation beams. Our physicians have the most extensive experience with this technique in the United States. Fox Chase also offers CyberKnife®, a state-of-the-art robotic radiosurgery system that targets the tumor precisely; and internal radiation therapy known as brachytherapy.
Our medical oncologists may recommend chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or ablation/embolization to treat sarcoma. Fox Chase also is one of the few cancer centers nationwide with the specialized skills to perform isolated limb infusion during chemotherapy on very large extremity sarcomas, which are among the most difficult to treat.
In addition to offering the most advanced therapies, surgical techniques and treatment regimens, the Fox Chase culture of integrated services enables us to support and improve the quality of life for patients experiencing physical, emotional or psychosocial changes associated with their treatment. Our goal is not only to cure cancer, but to provide each patient with the best possible quality of life as well as they live beyond cancer.
As a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Fox Chase works with each patient to choose the treatment plan predicted to provide the best outcome for their disease.
According to studies, patients who begin treatment at a hospital that specializes in cancer, like Fox Chase, have a better chance of survival*. In addition, our doctors expand their treatment offerings as clinical trials at Fox Chase and elsewhere reveal the latest effective treatments for sarcoma.
Radiation therapy at our outpatient center in Buckingham, Pa., is offered through the Fox Chase Department of Radiation Oncology. This location provides convenient access to advanced radiation therapy technologies that can decrease treatment time, improve precision, and reduce side effects.
