IDENTIFYING PATIENTS WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM REFERRAL

Patients with persistent pleural symptoms or imaging findings suggestive of pleural pathology should be considered for further evaluation. Common indications for referrals include:

  • Unexplained pleural effusion – Recurrent or persistent fluid accumulation
  • Suspected malignant pleural disease – Including mesothelioma and metastatic involvement
  • Recurrent pneumothorax – Patients requiring pleurodesis or surgical management
  • Chronic empyema or complicated parapneumonic effusions – For drainage and infection control
  • Pleural thickening or fibrosis – Suspected inflammatory or occupational etiology
